The addition of rain, snow, and nighttime driving is not simply cosmetic — headlights are required, wipers stay busy, and tires are tested. Codemasters made an odd choice with car collections. The main mode sees players earn reputation points in various events to gain the interest of sponsors who provide them with new vehicles.
Flashbacks return from Colin McRae: Dirt 2, which can be used up to five times in any difficulty, but cost reputation points to use. A new gymkhana mode puts players in obstacle courses, challenging them to perform various tricks to earn points.
DiRT 4. Dirt 3 is the best looking Dirt game to date. Watching sunsets and sliding through puddles in the rain is stunning, at both high and low speeds. Details like background fireworks and pedestrians scrambling out of the way are a nice touch in a world that feels alive, even in the remotest locations.
Car bodies collect dust and snow buildup, and the shiny gleam of rain on the windshield sets the tone of a muddy race. There are several adjustments to smooth the experience on a high-end computer. From ultra-detailed graphic settings to racing wheel calibration and force feedback, the PC allows the most hardcore rigs to experience the game at its greatest.
Not just in the roar of engines, but also in the details. From the trackside fan shout-outs to the crunch of packing snow, the details are what make the soundscape superb throughout. Most important of all, however, the extraordinary driving feel that Codemasters has applied to the series since its inception is maintained, with a control system closer to the arcade than to the simulation.
And it is not something that worries us, especially considering the amount of options that are incorporated, from the six levels of difficulty available, to the opportunity to deactivate aids such as ABS, the ideal line, the assisted braking or the control of stability. It is true that by reducing assists to a minimum the driving experience does not differ substantially, and Dirt 3 is seen to be the typical racing game where it is not necessary to have great knowledge to start playing.
To give another example, even vehicle adjustments are very simple, and with a simple bar we can modify the gear ratio, downforce, suspension or differential in a few seconds.
